This is a marvelous photograph of the interior of the New York & New Haven RR roundhouse at Spring Street, New Haven. The New York & New Haven RR opened Dec.29, 1848 and was a very expensive railroad to build because many bridges had to be constructed over rivers. No.33 is a 4-4-0 locomotive built with 13" x 20" cylinders by the famous Rogers Locomotive Works in 1848. During the early 1850's, Rogers did more than any other locomotive builder to improve locomotive design by introducing the wagon-top boiler, spread truck and working motion. The NY & NH RR was consolidated with the Hartford & New Have RR in 1870 to form the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.
