The dominant army reaches the city walls of the enemy. A large cannon is visible which places the date of this Battle no earlier than the first quarter of the 14th century, a time when cannon are first recorded in European warfare. Early artillery cannon were made of wrought iron, which was banded to reduce the danger of explosion during firing.
Early round shot was first made of iron but soon replaced by stone because of significant cost savings. Early large cannon were known as 'Bombards'. Smaller cannon shot not only round balls made of iron or stone, but arrow-like rounds with brass fin stabilizers. Saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal in varying proportions were the ingredients of the earliest gunpowders.
