| The locality and photographer are unknown for this portrait of the Reichsmarine 'Horst Wessel', a steel hulled, three masted barque that is now the only commissioned sailing ship of the United States government. Built in Nazi Germany in 1936, the 'Horst Wessel' and her two sister ships had the same engine room layout and frame as German Navy U-boats. She was taken by the United States as a war reparation and commissioned into the US Coast Guard as a cadet training vessel renamed 'Eagle'. This photograph appears to predate the transfer of the 'Horst Wessel' to the USGC in 1946, |
