EARLY LOCOMOTIVES and RAILROADS
MEMNON was one of the MOST POWERFUL, MID19th CENTURY LOCOMOTIVES.

< 7 ENGINES ..... > B&O SWITCH ENGINE

B&O 0-8-0

Baltimore & Ohio RR no.57 was built by the New Castle Manufacturing Co of New Castle, Delaware in 1848. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad used such locomotives to haul long coal and passenger trains. B.&O.R.R. no.57 is one of the least altered and most important early locomotives to have survived to the present day. Memnon has blind (flangeless) center drivers. It burned coal, whereas most engines of that day burned wood. Memnon is now housed at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum (now closed).

The B.&O. R.R. historic archives have a silver gelatin print of 'Memnon' taken at the Chicago 'Century of Progress" exhibition of 1934 by the famous railroad photographer Otto C.Perry. The photographer and date of this photo have not been identified, although it is in the style of Perry. In Greek mythology, 'Memnon' was an Ethiopian king who brought his army to the defense of Troy. Killed by Achilles, he was granted immortality by Zeus who was moved by his mother's tears as she pleaded for his life.
