| Charles Darwin Scott, a lumberman and self-taught engineering genius in Pennsylvania, was the inventor of the Climax Locomotive.. The first Climax was delivered in March, 1888 and the early designs were very crude. Three design classes of ever increasing size and complexity followed. The engine depicted in this photo would be Class B of a type first delivered in 1893. Over 1,000 Climax locomotives were built, the largest engine weighed in at 100 tons. The Climax Locomotive was a competitor to the well known Shay Locomotive which it outperformed. The demand for geared logging locomotives had all but disappeared by 1928 when Climax ceased manufacture and was sold. |
