This
engine is the earliest steam locomotive in the Historic Trains Image Archive.
The 4-2-0 wheel arrangement, in the White Classification is a 'Jervis'
locomotive. John B. Jervis,
who became first chief engineer of the Delware & Hudson Coal Company's
railroad in 1827, later designed the 4-2-0 locomotive that carries his name.
The design of this locomotive indicates a manufacture date in the early 1840s.
The stovepipe hat on the gentleman boarding the train, and the passenger
car itself suggest a date for this photograph in the 1860s.
"F.W. Smith" printed on this photograph may indicate the name of the engine, or that of a photographer or collector of railroad photos. There was a F. W. SMITH & Co. marble quarry located in the western part of Pittsford VT but it did not commence operations until 1880. Nonetheless, there is a remote possiblity that this quarry acquired an older locomotive to pull passenger cars because it was connected by a branch line to the Central Vermont Railroad. Another possibility is that this engine was named after an earlier generation 'F.W.Smith' of Vermont. Exact locality and photographer identifications therefore remain problematic. |
