Baltimore
& Ohio Railroad's. no.117 was a 4-6-0 designed and built in Baltimore
by Thatcher Perkins, B&O's Master of Machinery. This locomotive pulled first
class passenger trains over heavy grades in the Allegheny Mountains.
This Thatcher Perkins locomotive has survived to the present day and is
housed at the B.& O. Railroad Museum (now closed). Note the circus tent
behind the locomotive in this old photo. Was the Thatcher Perkins locomotive
assigned to pull a circus train many years ago?
The B.& O. R.R. was first chartered to build a railroad from the port of Baltimore to a suitable point on the Ohio River. and it operated from 1830 to 1963. Photographer, date and locality for this photograph have not been identified. |
