The Delaware & Hudson Canal Company , one of the older railroads in the United States, was chartered in 1823 to build and operate a canal system between New York City and the coal fields around Carbondale Pennsylvania. Company engineers soon began to think about a railroad to integrate with the canal system. They imported the famous early locomotive Stourbridge Lion from Foster, Rastrick and Company in England in 1829. Stroubridge Lion ran well, but was much to heavy for the rails upon which it ran as F, R & Co had ignored the maximum weight specification requested. Stourbridge Lion was soon retired and a strong American locomotive builder industry was in place by 1830.

This narrow gauge locomotive belongs to later 19th design and may have been a switch engine, or a locomotive that pulled a coal mining train. Photographer and exact locality for this photograph have not been identified.
