This work crew is laying or repairing track. The name F.W. Smith is scrawled on the lower margin of the photo, which suggests either a photographer or collector's name, or perhaps the locality of this scene is the near the F.W. Smith marble quarries in Pittsford VT. See Early Diamondstack Locomotive in the Historic Trains Archive. By 1888, the Maine Central had lines into St. Johnsbury VT. The Maine Central began operations in 1862, retraction of its extensive system began after WWWI. Photographer and locality identifications remain problematic.
