| INVADE, ATTACK then SIEGE |
| *** Battle prints 1 through 4, Naval Warfare 1 and Sieges 1 and 2 are executed in a style that closely resembles that of the artists who illustrated a 15th century edition of the "Speculum historiale". This history was written by Vincent of Beauvais, a priest and encyclopediast who set forth a history of the world to 1250 A.D. Little is known about the life of Vincent de Beauvais, he died between 1190 and 1264. His works were considered very important and were published in successive editions for several centuries after his death. The capture of Antioch in 1098, and the Battle of Crecy which took place in 1346 during the Hundred Years War, are among the epochal events of the European Middle Ages that the illustrators of later editions of Beauvais's works treated in his lush and vibrant style.***
