Weapons no.1 through no.6 are Halberds, a two handled pole weapon that combined a spiked staff with an axe, not necessarily in equal proportions. The axe swung heavily Could cut through a knight's armor. The long spike was invaluable to fend off spearmen and pikemen. The grappling hook, which was often found opposite the axe, could throw a horsemen to the ground. Halberds were the signature weapons of 14th century Swiss armies.
Weapons no. 8, 9, 11 and 12 are pikes, while no.10 is a knight's lance. Weapons no 12, 13, 14, and 15 are 'short' swords. No's 13 & 16 resemble scimitars and show Turkish or Arab influence. Weapons 17 and 18 are daggers. Weapons 19 through 25 are shields of diverse shapes and designs. No.19 and 21 might be crusader shields, or those carried by knights of a religious order. No's 20 and 22 have a Germanic, Norse or Saxon design. No. 20, 24 and 25 are typical of the large shields carried by foot solders, pikemen and archers first and foremost for protection against the volleys of arrows unleashed by enemy long bowmen. |
