| Fifth Rate warships had more than 18 but less than 38 guns. They were small frigates whose main tasks were to reconnoiter ahead of the main fleet, deliver dispatches to and from the fleet leadership, and attend to convoy duty and chase after pirates. This Fifth Rate has at least 28 guns. Too small for large naval battles, they were not considered 'ship of the line'. The seaport in this old stereo card photo appears to be European but no more precise identification has been possible. |
