George's Dock in Liverpool England is crowded with dozens of
sailing ships iced in during a long winter. George's Dock was planned as one important feature of a dramatic expansion of harbor facilities at Liverpool in the 18th century. The 'new' Liverpool dock system was deemed essential to meet the demands of a rapidly increasing trade with the Caribbean and British colonies in North America. The initial plan was conceived in 1709 with over 7 miles of docks and warehouses. Important early designs for enclosed 'wet docks' utilized water flow controlled by flood gates. Begun in 1767, completed in 1771 and then enlarged in 1825, George's Dock' final cost was £21,000. It was designed for the largest ships and 'Ship of the Line'. The row of buildings on the right are ''the magnificent warehouses'. During the 18th century, Liverpool was heavily involved in the slave trade. Loaded with goods, ships would leave Liverpool for Africa, there to trade for slaves which were taken to British colonies in the Caribbean and North America. Loaded again, this time with West Indies rum, these ships would return to England. By 1800, Liverpool was the second most important seaport in England but much of its wealth came from the infamous traffic in human beings. William Wilberforce, an independent MP from Yorkshire devoted much of his political carrer to ending slavery and his efforts led to England's adoption of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833. Liverpool's maritime trade continued to grow and prompted additional dock construction for many decades, the last being completed in 1972. There is no sign of early automobiles or trucks in this old stereo view, a circumstance that suggests a late 19th century date. Learn more about the Historic Liverpool Dock System |
