Two different fifth rates are seen in the first row of engravings, and a cannon is winched aboard the ship on the left. Below are two cannons, one of which is a 32 pound long gun mounted on a wooden carriage with four wheels in order to absorb the recoil after firing and allow the cannon to be drawn back from the gun port for reloading. Recoil was also restrained by block and tackle. The cannon at the left is a short barreled, shorter range, and lighter weight carronade mounted on a slide which absorbed the recoil. Carronades threw a heavier projectile (although a much shorter distance) than a long gun of the same weight, and their lighter weight made them valuable for topside gun ports where ship stability was critical. In the heat of battle, as few as two men could man a carronade. Bottom left a party of sailors approache a third rate at night, perhaps returning from a night on shore. Bottom right sailors secure their small craft to a winch prior to it being lifted aboard a third rate ship of the line.
