| Well into the 20th century, historians and the public alike persisted in associating the druids with Stonehenge, claiming this great megalithic structure was the premier druidic cult center in Britain. Romantic and exciting as this view may be, it is pure fiction. Archeological research has firmly established that earliest Celtic druids in Britain were situated in late Iron Age times. Long before druids became the high priests of ancient Celtic religion, Stonehenge had fallen into disrepair and the religion it served was long extinct. That is not to say that Celtic druids may not have visited Stonehenge and other megalithic monuments of ages past and been deeply impressed. But there is no hard evidence that such great stone monuments were used as Celtic cult centers. |
