Stonehenge trilithon altar stone

This photograph of the Center Trilithon and Altar Stone at Stonehenge was published in the 1867 Ordnance Survey report by Sir Colonel Henry James. The Altar Stone derives from Stonehenge II and with the Great Trilithon is oriented towards the midsummer sunrise framed by portal stones. The Altar Stone may have been believed to be the dwelling place of the Goddess, the primary deity of this sacred locus. The final stage of megalithic stone building at Stonehenge was completed c.1800 BC.
